Discover Morocco’s cinematic landscapes and legendary kasbahs on this unforgettable day trip from Marrakech to Ouarzazate. This full-day journey takes you through the spectacular High Atlas Mountains, across breathtaking scenery and into the heart of southern Morocco. Along the way, you’ll explore the famous Ait Ben Haddou and Telouet Kasbahs, both steeped in history and rich Berber heritage.
The day begins after breakfast, with departure from your Marrakech hotel or riad. As we leave the bustling city behind, the road winds upward toward the Tizi n’Tichka Pass — the highest mountain pass in North Africa at 2,260 meters above sea level. This journey offers some of the most stunning views in the country, with panoramic vistas of snow-capped peaks, deep valleys, and scattered Berber villages clinging to the hillsides.
During the drive, we’ll make several stops for photographs and short breaks, giving you a chance to soak in the natural beauty of the Atlas Mountains. The landscape changes dramatically as we cross over the pass — from the lush green valleys on the Marrakech side to the arid, red-toned scenery that hints at the proximity of the Sahara Desert.
Our first major stop will be at the Telouet Kasbah, once the residence of the powerful El Glaoui family, known as the “Lords of the Atlas.” This kasbah, though partly in ruins, remains one of the most historically significant in Morocco. As you explore its intricate mosaic tiles, carved wooden ceilings, and fortress-like architecture, your guide will share fascinating stories about the Glaoui dynasty and their role in Moroccan history.
From Telouet, we follow the ancient caravan route that once linked Sub-Saharan Africa with Marrakech. This historic road offers an authentic glimpse into Morocco’s trading past, as caravans once carried salt, gold, and spices through these very paths.
Next, we arrive at Ait Ben Haddou — Morocco’s most famous kasbah and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This iconic fortified village, or “ksar,” is an architectural masterpiece made entirely of earthen clay. It has served as a backdrop for countless Hollywood films and TV shows including Gladiator, Game of Thrones, Lawrence of Arabia, and The Mummy.
You’ll explore the labyrinth of narrow passageways, climb to the top of the kasbah for panoramic views of the surrounding desert, and learn about the families who still live within its walls. The view from above captures the essence of Morocco’s desert architecture — a symphony of earthen tones blending perfectly with the landscape.
After lunch at a local restaurant overlooking Ait Ben Haddou, we continue our drive to Ouarzazate, often referred to as the “Gateway to the Sahara.” This charming desert city has earned the nickname “The African Hollywood” thanks to its famous film studios.
Here, we’ll visit the Atlas Film Studios, the largest in Africa, where you can explore film sets used in international blockbusters. You’ll also visit the impressive Taourirt Kasbah, a maze of towers and courtyards that once served as the residence of the Pasha of Marrakech.
Ouarzazate’s blend of cinematic energy and historic authenticity makes it a fascinating place to explore — a city where the ancient and modern worlds meet.
As the afternoon draws to a close, we begin our return journey to Marrakech. The drive back through the High Atlas Mountains takes on a different beauty as the sun sets, casting warm golden hues over the valleys and peaks.
By evening, we arrive back in Marrakech, marking the end of your Ouarzazate day trip — a full day of exploration, discovery, and unforgettable memories.
